Update (23JUL10): Unfortunately this radio station went away.

1. Bad stream quality
   FM was invented in 1925 by Abraham Esau and we can listen to good sound quality radio for over 75 years. Why should I listen to your 64 kbps or even 24 kbps radio? If you can’t afford the bandwidth then try at least to spice up the stream with AAC.
2. Ever changing IP address
   If I like your radio i will put it in my bookmarks. It’s quite anoying if I try to listen to your stream the next day and the player can not find it. More often than not I‘m too lazy to look for the new address and simply delete the bookmark. Get a domain name, it’s cheap.
3. No ID3 tags
   I like to know to what song I am listening right now and my media player will tell it to me if… if you put the ID3 tags into your stream.
4. Repeating always the same songs
   Classic Rock, New Wave or 80’s collections should contain more than your 20 favourite songs. Such small collections will keep me one hour with your stream and off you go.
5. Force me to install any plugins
   If you want me to install any plugins because you‘re using some esoteric codec you‘ve lost a new potential listener this very minute.
6. Not following any conventions
   There are some unwritten conventions which will make the life of your listeners easier. You should for example put the station’s name and any other additional information in round brackets behind the ID3 informationen. This will enable the lyrics plugin my to distinguish between them and to display the correct lyrics.
7. No MP3/OGG stream
   Some people want me to use their almost unusable Flash players to listen to their stream. Despite the poor sound quality most of these players offer I don’t want to have an open browser tab or an extra browser window on my screen. I like my media player and it’s the only application use for music (OK, the last.fm player is an exception).

Most web radios are aware of the bad habits above and try to avoid them and if not, many will change their streaming after a small hint.

Mich nervte schon als Jugendlicher (also in den 80ern des letzten Jahrhunderts) am Radiohören, dass ich ein wirklich tolles Lied hörte (was damals noch möglich war) und ich gerne wissen wollte, wer es singt und wie es heißt. Ging aber nicht, da der Moderator am Ende des Liedes nicht noch einmal das Gleiche sagen wollte, wie vor dem Lied und ich somit in diesem Zusammenhang dumm blieb. Das nebenbei dem Künstler, bzw. der den Künstler vertretende Firma, der mögliche Verkauf eines Tonträgers entging, ist nur Nebensache.

Mit dem Internetradio war das Problem gelöst, denn (fast) alle Sender verpacken in ihren MP3-Stream den Künstler und den Titel als ID3-Tag und der Nutzer, also ich, ist immer über den aktuellen Titel informiert. Leider hat das bei byte.fm lange Zeit nicht geklappt. Ich hatte schon im Januar diesen Jahres „gemeckert“ und es wurde mir versprochen, dass bald ID3-Tags benutzt werden. Lange ist nichts passiert, aber heute nachmittag ist mir aufgefallen, dass auch bei diesem Sender endlich die Möglichkeiten von MP3-Streams intensiver genutzt werden:

Statt meines alten Bookmarks http://streamingserver01.byte.fm:80/stream/stream.php gibt es jetzt einen „offiziellen“ Stream: http://www.byte.fm/stream/bytefm.m3u.

Hätte man ja auch mal Bescheid sagen können! Oder habe ich was verpasst?

Ich kann nur sagen: genial! Man merkt den dreien den Spaß einfach an und die Zwischenansagen kann ich sogar mit meinen Niederländisch-Kenntnissen verstehen. Gute Videoaufnahme, gute Audioaufnahme. Man sollte sich auf jeden Fall „JOS Vrees“ (JOS days) anhören/ansehen, auf niederländisch erhält das Lied eine noch persönlichere Note.

Was will man mehr? Ach ja: mehr davon! Um auf dem Laufenden zu bleiben wird in guter 2.0-Manier natürlich ein Blog mit (Full-Content) Feed angeboten.
Ach ja, eines sollte nicht unerwähnt bleiben: Man kann einzelne Lieder anwählen! Wie kühl ist das denn? Da hat mal wirklich jemand nachgedacht.

Neben den Ebonycuts ist Six Million Steps eine gute Quelle für uns Vierzigjährige. Neben Disco gibt es Funk, Boogie, Philly Sound, Jazz Funk und eine „Time Capsule“, eine Radio-Show aus den 70ern.

Wo sind meine Schlaghosen, Cowboystiefel und Glitzerjäckchen….?

Wenn sie jetzt noch Künstler und Titel mit reinpacken….

Beim einem Klick auf „music“ erwartet einem die Statistik von Shoutcast mit einer weiteren überraschung:

Average Listen Time: 60h 45m 54s

Der durchschnittliche Hörer lauscht also 2,5 Tage, durchgehend. Alles sehr seltsam.
